Traditionally Tourism Kelowna staff and volunteers get together during the spring and early summer for familiarization tours of our stakeholder businesses. With our growing number of stakeholders we have decided to add a few familiarization tours in the fall and winter months as well. These tours allow the staff at the Visitor Centre and Airport Kiosk to experience everything our stakeholders have to offer and transfer that passion into the plans of current and future visitors. Over the last few weeks Taylor Jones has been quite busy at the Visitor Centre organizing our new series of winter familiarization tours. So far the staff and volunteers have participated in familiarization tours on December 1st and December 7th. Taylor has written up his account of these informative adventures!

Sunday December 1st – Silver Star Mountain Resort

We arrived at Silver Star early on Saturday morning and were nicely greeted by a fresh load of snow. Our morning started off with a wonderful Silver Star Mountain presentation by Anna Tilly. We learned all about the various accommodations, events, attractions, family activities and dining facilities. One of the great perks to a Silver Star day pass is the ability to partake in everything the mountain has to offer. This is Canada’s first “all-inclusive” day ticket allowing you to explore the whole mountain without having to pay additional fees.

After our presentation, we explored the rock climbing wall and theatre. The climbing wall is open on various nights and the theatre has a Nintendo Wii for the children’s game night! Following this we were treated to a delicious Amsterdam-inspired meal at The Bulldog! The Bulldog has recently been updated and the rooms are looking better than ever. Another great feature of Silver Star is the small grocery store in case you forgot to include anything within the available grocery delivery service from Save-On Foods or Butcher Boys.

Our afternoon on the mountain consisted of a very competitive game of bowling and a tour of some accommodations. We learned that the Chilcoot Lodge and Conference Centre can accommodate up to 300 people for a conference, the Grandview has the best views of the Monashee mountains, and Firelight is very family friendly as it has private and public-use hot tubs, a bowling alley, fire pit, and a modern café!

Saturday December 7th – Kelowna Familiarization Tour

After leaving the Visitor Centre at 8:45 a.m. our first stop was Discover Wines. This is a VQA wine shop located in Orchard Plaza across from Target. They sell a very extensive selection of wines from our VQA wineries along with a large amount of retail items and gifts. Our second stop was the H2O Centre. This facility is owned by the City of Kelowna but operated by the YMCA. They offer a large amount of fitness programs at the facility in addition to the drop-in or membership use of the gym or pools. After the H20 Centre we headed just down the street to Beyond the Vineyards B&B, a relatively new stakeholder of Tourism Kelowna. Beyond the Vineyard offers a one-bedroom suite, large bathroom with shower, a private movie theatre and hot tub. In the summer months, they also have an outdoor pool.

After a great start to the day we ventured over to the Glenmore area of Kelowna and stopped in at Pleasant Pear Orchard B&B. This B&B has four rooms, all with fantastic views of the surrounding orchard. The farmhouse has been converted from a family home into stunning B&B. After enjoying some tasty baked goods we made our way to Colour Me Mine. We learned that they cater to the general public as well as those wanting to have a private party. Studio fees are $9 plus the cost of your chosen ceramic. All of this adventuring made for some hungry volunteers so we stopped at Moxies for a quick bite to eat. While enjoying our lunch we learned that Moxies has a private room for parties of 10 or more!

After our delicious lunch we made our way to three more B&B’s and a Winery. Our first afternoon stop was La Mount Chardonnay B&B. With beautiful beds, a large yard, amazing view, and a personal chef, La Mount Chardonnay is a great accommodation option. Next, House of Rose Winery and we got the chance to sample “Hot Flash”, “Cool Splash”, and “Winter White”, some of the wines that House of Rose is most known for. After enjoying some great wine we traveled over to West Kelowna for a visit at A View of the Lake B&B and Demonstration Kitchen. This B&B has stunning views, as the name would imply, and the kitchen is just as impressive! Demonstrations are done for parties of 8-12 people and the B&B can accommodate up to 10 people.

Next was Panoramic Lake View B&B. This is a very family friendly B&B with three beds and lake views to accommodate up to 6 people. Finally on our way back to the Visitor Centre, we navigated our Budget Yukons through downtown Kelowna where we were able to experience the magical moment of warmth and beauty as a hot air balloon flame glistened at the Light-up Ceremony.
