Calgary Meetings & Conference Update

Tourism Kelowna recently attended the One Conference in Calgary hosted by the local MPI and ILEA Chapters

Tourism Kelowna’s Business Development Consultant in Calgary, Nicolle Gomez de Sousa has been busy reminding Calgary based corporations that Kelowna is an affordable, easy and welcoming option for their business meetings.  In all her meetings, she has been told  that with energy prices stabilizing, businesses are now increasing production, hiring staff, and ultimately making more money which enables them to lift travel bans and meeting restrictions.

Earlier this month, the local Calgary chapters of Meeting Professionals International (MPI) and the International Live Events Association (ILEA) joined forces to host 80 meeting industry professionals for the annual One Conference.  Nicolle attended the conference and had an opportunity network with a number of third party and association meeting planners during the course of the day.  The event also included a small marketplace to further promote our destination to the attendees and she is currently working on a familiarization trip for one of the planners who Nicolle met during the conference.

We Want Your National Association Meeting in Kelowna

Tourism Kelowna’s Pat Gappmayr and representatives from Mission Hill Family Estate, Delta Hotels by Marriott Grand Okanagan Resort, The Cove Lakeside Resort and Cantrav attended the Tête à Tête trade show and conference in Ottawa last week.  The trade show brings together national association members from the Ottawa Gatineau region to learn and consider destinations for their conferences.  We had 45 meeting planners stop by our booth and have already seen two leads as a result of conversations at the trade show.  The day ended with the MPI Charity Auction & Dinner Gala with over 650 attendees.

Prior to the show, Tourism Kelowna also participated in Destination Direct, a two day event that starts with a hosted buyer networking reception and dinner event for 20 clients.  The following day, Tourism Kelowna had appointments with 10 meeting planners for one-on-one conversations about what Kelowna has to offer their next meeting or conference.  Day two is capped off at a networking event called the Reveal social where many of the Canadian DMOs host planners for the evening.

New Advertising to Target Meeting Planners

Tourism Kelowna’s meeting and conference focused advertising featured in the nationally distributed Ignite Magazine

Tourism Kelowna has some new advertising in the marketplace to target meeting and conference planners.  Updated branding and new imagery has been incorporated for 2017.  The print ad above is running in the February/March and June/July editions of the national meeting and conference trade magazine Ignite.

Along with the print ad, Tourism Kelowna has purchased digital banner ads for 2017 that will appear on our competitor destination pages on CVENT.com, a key international meeting planner resource for conference venues and destinations.

Fall FAMs Update

Meeting Encore FAM Tour

Our Sales team has been busy hosting clients on familiarization tours over the past month.

In September and October we have hosted 16 planners in Kelowna including six planners from Meeting Encore, a third party planning company out of Toronto.   We co-hosted our first ever ‘superFAM’ with the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort & Conference Centre which not only featured the Delta Grand but several other Kelowna venues and hotels.  Throughout the fall we also hosted planners from Bell Mobility, Brownlee LLP, BC Electrical Association and Tree of Life.

Recap of Local Sports Town Hall Meeting

Earlier this week Tourism Kelowna, City of Kelowna, and PacificSport Okanagan hosted over 30 representatives of various local sport organizations in an effort to increase communication, education, and collaboration between the three groups and the local community. Hosted at Parkinson Recreation Centre, Tourism Kelowna presented a summary of our Sport and Events Department’s role and how our services can benefit their individual sports. Continue reading

Tourism Kelowna Sales Team September Recap

The last month has been busy for our sales team as we ramp up our sales efforts with planners looking for venues and destination for 2017 and beyond.

We continued to build some destination awareness partnering with the Canadian Consulate and Business Events Canada to host a Western Canada evening at the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays baseball game.  Tourism Kelowna along with Manteo Resort, the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort, The Cove Lakeside Resort, and Mission Hill Family Estate hosted forty clients in a stadium box and mingled with them throughout the evening.  The following evening we headed out to Bellevue for a quick client reception as we continue to try to find interesting ways to reach clients in the Seattle area.

Earlier this week our team was down in Vancouver and partnered with Details Catering and Chef Mark Filatow for an amazing six course dinner at L’Abattoir in Vancouver.   Chef Lee Cooper and Chef Filatow took turns showcasing the tastes of the Okanagan Wine Festival as each course was paired with wines from Sandhill Wines, Quails’ Gate Family Estate, Summerhill Pyramid Winery and Mission Hill Family Estate.  During the evening, our partners: Synergy Events, Quails’ Gate Family Estate, Mission Hill Family Estate and Manteo Resort Waterfront Hotel & Villas mingled with clients and chatted about future programs in Kelowna.
